DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1500Z JULY 03, 2005

Alaska:
Several fires in central Alaska northwest of Fairbanks are producing
smoke that is moving to the east and extends to the Canadian border
where it mixes with a mass of clouds.

Canada:
A broad area of smoke generated over the past few days from the fires
in Alaska and the Yukon Territory extends from Great Slave Lake in the
Northwest Territories southeastward across northeast Alberta and northern
Saskatchewan, covering Lake Athabasca, and into northwest Manitoba. The
smoke is thickest across Alberta and western Saskatchewan.

Southwest:
The numerous large blazes across Nevada, Utah and Arizona have produced
an area of diffuse smoke vrom southeast Nevada and northwest Arizona
eastward into southwest Colorado. Another area of diffuse smoke can be
seen over eastern Colorado and southwest Kansas dropping through the
Texas and Oklahoma panhandles into eastern New Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
