DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1500Z JULY 04, 2005

Alaska:
Several fires in central Alaska northwest of Fairbanks are producing
smoke that is moving to the east and extends roughly to the Canadian
border. Broken clouds through the region make smoke detection difficult.

Canada:
An area of dense smoke is seen over central Canada. The smoke is
mainly over the northern half of Saskatchewan and extending north into
the Northwest Territory east of Great Slave Lake where it mixes with
clouds. A finger of smoke also extends to the southeast from northwest
Manitoba into central Manitoba where it thins.

Southwest:
Smoke from the numerous fires in Arizona and Nevada is seen stretching
from the western half of New Mexico back west across northern Arizona
and into extreme southwest Nevada. The main fire complex in southwest
Nevada north of Las Vegas is producing a smoke plume that is moving to
the northeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
