DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0230Z JULY 12, 2005

Alaska:
No overall large areas of smoke are seen but at least four fires in
central Alaska have moderate plumes extending toward the northeast.

Canada:
The large widespread Saskatchewan fires continue to produce smoke that
moves eastward, eventually reaching Hudson Bay before becoming covered
with clouds. These fires are also believed to be the source of smoke
seen earlier today moving southward through Quebec Province.

Kansas:
Very numerous agricultural burns continue to produced an area of smoke
sometimes mixed with haze in central Kansas.

Arizona:
Two of the fires in Coconino County have plumes that extend to the north
northeast. A fire near the border of Pima and Santa Cruz Counties is
producing smoke that extends toward the west.

Baja California:
There are several large fires in northern Baja California at least two
of which are producing significant smoke. The smoke does not appear
likely to extend into the U.S.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
