DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0100Z JULY 14, 2005

Alaska/Western Canada:
Fire activity in Alaska has diminished since yesterday but
continues unabated and might even have increased in the Northwest
Territories. Cloudiness is making smoke detection difficult throughout
the area but smoke or smoke mixed with haze was seen earlier today in
the Great Bear Lake region.

Central Canada:
Dense smoke from the numerous ongoing fires in northern Saskatchewan
and Manitoba is moving eastward. The area encompassed is smaller than
last night but thick smoke can still be seen over northern Saskatchewan
Manitoba and Ontario.

Washington:
A fire in southern Okanogan County is producing a smoke plume that
extends to the southeast almost reaching the Idaho border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
