DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1630Z JULY 14, 2005

Alaska/Western Canada:
There is a small area of smoke seen in morning GOES 10 visible imagery
in the central region of Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Cloudiness
across the region is making smoke and fire detection difficult.

Central Canada/Central and Eastern U.S.:
A dense area of smoke and haze from the ongoing fires in northern
Saskatchewan and Manitoba is moving into the Central US across the
northern and central Plains including the states of eastern North Dakota,
South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma and then moving eastward
into the Great Lakes region, Ohio Valley and the Mississippi Valley
including the states of Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio,
Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas and western Tennessee.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
