DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1630Z JULY 21, 2005

Northwestern/Central Canada:
The fires that have been burning in Yukon and Northwest Territories this
past week are leaving a large area of smoke across Northwestern/Central
Canada. Smoke this morning in GOES 10 and 12 imagery now extends southward
into the northern/central Alberta and Saskatchewan Provinces and then
spreads eastward into central Manitoba just east of Lake Winnipeg.
The smoke should reach the west central half of Ontario by this afternoon
or early evening. The full extent of the smoke continues to be difficult
to estimate due to cloud cover across the region.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
