DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0015Z JULY 23, 2005

Central Canada:
Dense smoke can be seen across the northern half of Saskatchewan, SE
across Lake Winnipeg and across Lk. Nipigon in SW and across SC Ontario
between Lk. Superior and James Bay.  The most dense area is located north
of the Lake of the Woods and Rainy Lake along the US/Canadian boarder.

Alaska:
Dense smoke from the Boundary Creek fire and the two fires to its NW
is moving S toward the Wrangell Range in  3 plumes (one per each fire)
with an average width around 20mi.

Convective dense smoke from the fire 14mi S of Tanana, AK is in a line
35mi wide extending to the WSW to SE of Katlag, AK.  Dense smoke from
last evening and this morning extends W and NW from the aforementioned
area across the Seward Peninsula and Bering Strait to the western most
point near the Gulf of Kolyuchinskaya on the northern Russian coast.

Utah/Idaho:
Moderately dense smoke from a new fire 6mi NW of the northern tip of the
Great Salt Lake, near the town of Park Valley, UT.  The plume extends
NE in a 25mi wide line to the city of Grace, ID in Caribou county.

Colorado:
Moderately dense smoke from the Pack Trail fire is in a line 10mi wide
ext N to the NE Moffat county line along the WY boarder.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
