DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1530Z JULY 26, 2005

Alaska/Yukon:
A broad area of smoke along a west/east axis extends across most of
north-central Alaska from the Seward peninsula eastward across the Yukon
valley, staying north of Fairbanks and banked up against the southern
edge of the Broooks Range, into the northern Yukon Territory, crossing
the Ogilvie Mountains. The smoke area is approximately 300 km wide with
the smoke over the western half of Alaska moving mainly to the west and
the smoke over the eastern half of Alaska and the Yukon Territory mainly
drifting to the east.

Ontario:
An small area of smoke was seen moving south from southern Ontario into
north central Lake Superior. The source of the smoke is most likely
fires burning near Lake Nipigon in south central Ontario.

Washington:
An area of thin/diffuse smoke was seen over north central Washington
moving northeast across Okanogan county. It is likely that the source
of the smoke was a fire near Wenatchee.

California:
An area of thin smoke was seen drifting to the northwest from the central
San Joaquin Valley into the east San Frnacisco Bay area.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
