DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0130Z JULY 28, 2005

Alaska/NW Canada:
Thick smoke extends from Yukon Territory across central Alaska before
splitting to the northwest over the Arctic Ocean and to the southwest
through the Kuskokwim Mountains. Narrow plume of thick smoke exists
between Great Bear Lake and Great Slave Lake.

Oregon/California/Idaho:
Union County, Oregon fire is producing a smoke plume that is moving
towards the northeast and the southwest. Other Oregon fires were burning
in Jackson County and Grant County. Smoke from the Jackson fire was
moving towards the north while smoke from Grant county was moving towards
the east. A fire in Lemhi County Idaho had generated a dense smoke plume
that extended to the east. Smoke was moving towards the northwest from
a fire located in Malheur County California.

Southern Plains:
Small sporadic plumes were moving north from various fires between the
Texas Panhandle and central Kansas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
