DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1700Z JULY 29, 2005

Alaska:
Moderate to Dense smoke covers most of interior Alaska between the Brooks
and Alaska ranges from near Eagle in the east to the Kotzebue Sound in
the northwest. The smoke is less dense on the western edge of this area ,
over the Seward peninsula. Moderately dense smoke also wraps southward
into southwest Alaska on the back side of a deep upper low in the Gulf
of Alaska. The smoke is being channeled southward mainly between Kodiak
Island and Squaw Harbor and reaches as far south as 52N158W.

Oregon:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire northeast of Ashland is mainly confined
to Jackson county.

Utah/Montana/Colorado:
A thin plume of wispy smoke is seen extending from a fire in southwest
Daggett county Utah in the Ashley National Forest to the northeast
across the Flaming Gorge reservoir in Montana. An area of dissipating
smoke was over northwest Colorado drifting to the east southeast toward
central Colorado.

Dust and Sand:
A large area of Saharan dust and sand can be seen over much of the
southwest Gulf of Mexico. The northern extent reaches to near Corpus
Christi in Texas and the northwest portion of the Yucatan peninsula. The
dust is thickest along the northern portion.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
