DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1600Z August 01, 2005

Alaska:
Significant smoke is confined to western Alaska mainly west of a line
from King Salmon to Ruby to Kobuk to Cape Lisburne. The fires producing
the most smoke this morning are between Norton Sound and Galena.

Additional smoke from the Alaska fires was seen over the northern Gulf
of Alaska.

Northwest Canada:
An area of smoke was seen from near the Yukon/Northwest Territory border
west of Great Bear Lake extending to the east-southeast to the eastern
end of Great Slave Lake. The smoke was approximately 275 km wide.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
