DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0045Z August 02, 2005

Alaska:
Significant smoke is over western Alaska mainly from southwestern
Northwest-Arctic to western Bethel county. Fires producing the most
smoke are located in the western portion of Yukon-Koyukuk county.

Northwest Canada:
An area of thin smoke was visible over western Northwest Territory from
east of Great Bear Lake to north of Great Slave Lake.

Texas:
Dense smoke from a fire over southwest Jefferson county spread southward
along the Coast, as far as, Corpus Christi.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
