DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0200Z August 06, 2005

Alaska:
Smoke stretches from from the Yukon Territory into eastern Alaska and
southwestward to the Kuskokwim Bay.

Southwest British Columbia:
Smoke associated with a fire in southern Coast Mountains producing a
plume that is fanning out from NE-E-SE.

Washington:
Smoke from fire in Kittitas County is moving east while smoke from fire
in Columbia County is moving east northeast. Fire on border of Whitham
County Washington and Latah County Idaho is also producing a smoke plume
that is moving east northeast.

Montana:
Fires in Ravalli and Missoula County are producing thick plumes of smoke
that are moving east.

Minnesota:
Fires in Roseau County are producing smoke plumes that are moving
northeast.  Same is true for a fire near Smokey Bear State Forest.

South Ontario:
Fire 80 nmi north of Lake Superior is producing a smoke plume that is
moving east.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
