THRU 0100Z August 09, 2005

Northwest U.S.:
Dense smoke extends from southeast Washington across northern Idaho and
into northwestern Montana. The smoke is caused by fires in Washington(near
the border of Columbia and Garfield counties) and in northwestern
Montana(central Mineral county). Thin smoke from isolated fires over
southwestern Oregon is drifting southward.

Alaska:
Dense smoke is associated with numerous fires over extreme southeastern
Wade Hampton and southwestern Yukon-Koyukuk counties. Another area of
dense smoke is from the fires over northeastern Yukon-Koyukuk. Thin
smoke from the fires over Southeast Fairbanks county is spreading into
western Yukon Territory.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
