DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1630Z August 09, 2005

Northwest U.S.:
A broad area of moderately dense smoke is seen extending east from the
active fires over extreme southeast Washington near Pomeroy. The smoke
fans out as it spreads to the east. It covers north central Idaho roughly
between Grangeville and Prichard and extends into Montana reaching about
as far east as Mosby.

Alaska:
Numerous fires across central and southwest Alaska are producing areas
of dense smoke. The smoke extends in an arc from the Taylor Mountains
east of Bethel northward over the eastern Norton Sound then turns to the
east-northeast and following the Yukon river between Galena and Fort
Yukon. It continues into the northern Yukon Territory where it mixes
with clouds.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
