DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1600Z August 19, 2005

Alaska/Northwestern Canada:
Numerous fires continue to burn across this region producing an area
of dense smoke. The heavier smoke stretches across most of western and
central Alaska from about the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas southward to the
Bering Sea and eastward to the Ogilvie Mountains in west central Yukon
Territory. In the eastern half of Alaska, the dense smoke ranges from
the Philip Smith Mountains southward to the White Mountains. An area of
thin smoke covers the northeastern and southeastern sections of Alaska.
Most of Yukon/Northwest Territories and the northern half of British
Columbia are covered with clouds obscuring areas of thin smoke.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
