DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 0100ZZ August 20, 2005

Alaska/Northwestern Canada:
Numerous fires are producing a large area of thick smoke that stretches
from central Yukon Territory westward through central Alaska and south
across the Aleutian Range and into the Pacific.

ID/MT:
Numerous fires in Idaho and Lemhi Counties in Idaho and one fire in
Ravalli County Montana have produced a large area of smoke that extends
up to 100 nmi to the east.

OR:
A fire in Deschutes County has resulted in a smoke plume that stretched
54 nmi to the north.  Another fire near Curry, Coos and Douglas Counties
has generated a large, thick plume that extended 67 nmi to the north.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
