DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THRU 1530Z August 20, 2005

Alaska/Northwestern and Northcentral Canada:
The numerous Alaskan fires continue to produce an area of dense smoke
that now covers almost all of Alaska, and then extends into the Yukon
Territory (except for the southeastern part of the Yukon Territory) and
then continues into the Northwest Territories where it remains just
north and west of Great Bear Lake. A separate area of moderate smoke
from previous night's fires probably mixed with haze can be seen farther
east in the Northwest Territories, just west and north of Hudson Bay.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
