DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z August 23, 2005

Alaska/Northwestern Canada:
Thick smoke extends from northeast Alaska across the northern Yukon
Territory through central Northwest Territories just west of Great Bear
Lake, over Great Slave Lake and entering into extreme northeast Alberta
and northwest Saskatchewan.

Oregon:
Moderately dense smoke is associated with a fire in southwest Oregon
near the Wild Rogue Wilderness Area. The smoke is moving south and is
approaching the California border. Another fire over Harney County has
generated a smoke plume moving towards the northeast.

California/Nevada:
Smoke from the Sequoia/Kings Canyon blaze extends 85 nmi to the west
into the central valley. A fire in Washoe County, Nevada is producing
a thick plume that is moving east.

Minnesota:
A fire in Lake of Woods County is producing a smoke plume that is moving
north along the Manitoba/Ontario border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
