DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z August 28, 2005

N Canada – NW Territories/Saskachewan/Nunavut:
A broad area of thin wispy smoke can be seen along the periphery of the
cloudy regions of the cyclone over W Ontario. A arm of the smoke extends
southward on the western side of the cyclone across E Saskachewan. Smoke
becomes more dense to moderate levels over NE Alberta/S NW Territories/S
Nunavut and N Saskachewan over Lake Athabasca. The smoke originated from
the large Alaskan fires.

Minnesota/Wisconsin:
Along the southern side of the cyclone in W Ontario, thin smoke from
fires in ID/OR/MT over the last few nights can be seen over far S MN
into WI from the SD boarder along the IA line to near Eau Claire, WI.

E Montana:
Moderately dense smoke from 3 separate fires, including: the Erickson
Spring fire, a new fire just NW of Park City, MT along I-90, and a new
fire half way between Hardin and Xavier City along the western banks of
the Bighorn River covers a large area of SE MT and NE WY.  The smoke
extends ESE from Park City, MT 443km to the northern portions of the
Black Hills in SD and on average is about 100 km in width.

Idaho/Western Montana:
An area of thin to moderate smoke covers nearly all of C ID into W MT
including the counties of  Idaho, N Lemhi, E Clearwater in ID, and the
counties of N Beaverhead, Deer Lodge, Powell, Granite, Ravalli, Missoula,
and S Mineral in MT.  Within this area are multiple convectively dense
plumes of smoke from intense fires including:
The Granite fire plume extends NE 211km into S Mineral county and is
about 41km wide.
The Frank Church fire plume extends E 191km into N Beaverhead county
and is 67km wide.
The Red Rive Complex plume extends E 77km into Ravalli county and is
28km wide.
The Long Black fire plume extends E 161km into Powell county and is
39km wide.

Nevada:
Convective dense smoke from a new fire along the Egan range just SW of
Cherry Creek, NV in White Pine county extends E 78km to the Utah boarder
and is 31km wide.

Moderately dense smoke from a new fire just W of the Independence Mtns
and NW of Tuscarora in Elko county has detatched from the fire and is
drifting E between SR-225 and US-93 and is about 59km long (W-E) and
42km wide (N-S).

S California:
Dense smoke from a new fire just south of I-10 near Mt. San Jacinto
State Park is fanning out from SE to S and extends 213km SE into N Baja
California and extends S 70km into east-central San Diego County.

Baja California:
Dense smoke from a fire near La Bufadora or just south of the Bahia de
Todos Santos extends 152km south to Bahia de San Quentin and west 71km
out to sea.

NW Gulf of Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire on the southern shore of Marsh Island
extends SW 99km and is 17km wide.

Moderately dense to dense smoke from 2 fires S of Grand and White Lakes
in E Cameron and W Vermilion Parishes extends SW 164km and is 24km wide.

Thin to moderately dense smoke from a fire in SW Cameron Parish and a
fire in Jefferson county, TX is extending SW 171km just off shore of
Galvaston  is 67km wide
