DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z August 28, 2005

Idaho/Montana/Wyoming:
An area of moderately thick smoke was seen stretching from south central
Montana into northeast and east central Wyoming..mainly along and east
of the Bighorn Mountains. The smoke area was about 175 km wide and was
moving east-southeast. Another moderately thick smoke area was seen over
northwest Wyoming over Yellowstone Park and was moving east. A fire near
Riggins in west central Idaho is producing a moderately dense, narrow
smoke plume that is confined to the valley in the nearby vicintity of
the fire.

Canada:
An area of smoke from the Alaskan fires is over northwest Hudson Bay and
extends from northern Manitoba north across Nunavut toward the Arctic
Coast. This smoke is mainly thin with the thickest area near the eastern
Nunavut/Manitoba border along the Bay.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
