DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z September 2, 2005

Montana and Dakotas:
Thin areas of smoke were seen over east central Montana and over south
central North Dakota along the South Dakota border. Both of these areas
were generated from the fires in Idaho.

California:
A fire in or near Sequoia National Forest was producing a plume of
moderately thick smoke about 20 km wide extending to the west, not
quite reaching to the city of Fresno. In the past 1-2 hours the plume
has shifted and is now drifting to the north into northwest Inyo county.

Texas and Arkansas:
A fire in northeast Texas to the northeast of Longview is producing
a moderately thick plume of smoke moving to the southwest. A fire in
Calhoun county in south central Arkansas is producing a moderately thick
plume of smoke extending west into Nevada county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
