DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z September 3, 2005

Idaho/Montana/Alberta/Saskatchewan:
The numerous fires burning over north central Idaho have produced a
75 nm wide line of dense smoke moving towards the northeast. The smoke
extends from southwest to northeast starting near Selway Bitterroot
National Forest in Idaho and moving across Missoula, Montana and ending
in extreme southeast Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan.

California:
A fire in the Sequoia National Forest near Hume is producing a large
plume of mostly thin smoke extending towards the west to just south of
Pine Flat Lake.

Northern Plains:
An area of dense smoke moving towards the east southeast extends from
southeastern Saskatchewan and extreme southwestern Manitoba and then
southward across North Dakota. In North Dakota the smoke stretches from
about Williston to as far east as Devils Lake and south to Emmons County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
