DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z September 4, 2005

Idaho/Montana/Wyoming/Alberta/Saskatchewan:
Numerous fires continue to burn over north central Idaho and are producing
a broad plume of dense smoke (about 200 km wide) that extends to the
northeast across western Montana into north central Montana and southern
Alberta and Saskatchewan extending as far east as the Montana/North
Dakota border. Three separated fires are a bit further south: near
Idaho City, near Ketchum and near Stanley. Each is producing a plume of
smoke that extends to the northeast and merges with the larger area of
smoke. Another fire at the north end of the Palisades reservoir in east
Idaho is producing a narrow plume of moderately dense smoke about 35 km
wide that extends to the northeast across northwest Wyoming.

California:
A fire in the Sequoia National Forest near Hume is producing a plume
of moderately dense smoke extending east northeast into northwest Inyo
county and reaching the Nevada border. A fire near Lebec and the Tejon
Pass is producing a plume of moderately dense smoke 75 km wide that
extends to the northeast across Kern and into northeast Tulare county.

Minnesota:
An area of dense smoke moving towards the east southeast covers most of
the northeast quarter of Minnesota. This area of smoke originated from
the fires burning in Idaho.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
