DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z September 8, 2005

Minnesota:
Dense smoke from a new fire NW of Ely in NE St. Louis county extends
127km ESE to the shore of Lake Superior and is 43km wide.

Northern Great Plains:
An large area of thin to moderately dense smoke is moving eastward across
the eastern quarter of MT, the NW corner of SD and all of ND.

Montana/Idaho:
Convectively very dense smoke is erupting form the Valley Road fire
extends 284km NE to Madison county, MT and is on average 100km wide.
The smoke is mixed with smoke from other fires under the canopy.

The aforementioned smoke is the southern portion of a large area
of dense smoke from multiple fires.  The northern fires producing
multiple plumes extending eastward include: Long Black Complex, Frank
Church, Selway-Salmon, Powell Complex, Rockin, and Signal Rock fires.
Smoke covers the following counties in ID: E Idaho, E Clearwater, and
Lemhi and covers the following counties in MT: Beaverhead, Madison,
Silver Bow, Deer Lodge, Granite, Ravalli, S Powell.

Multiple fires along the Washington/Idaho boarder in Benewah, SW Kootenai
and N Latah are producing moderate to dense smoke moving E covering
Benewah, SE Kootenai and central Shoshone.

Convectively dense smoke from the Hazard Lake fire along the Teton and
Lewis and Clark county line extends due E 180km into C Chouteau county
and is on average 39km wide.
Oregon:
Moderate to dense smoke from a new fire along the Grant and Wheeler
county line near the town of Kimberly. The smoke extends 64km to the
Harney county line and is about 23 km wide.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
