DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z September 20, 2005

Oregon/Idaho:
Numberous fires have erupted across central Idaho and northeast Oregon.
A dense plume of smoke extended 62 nmi to the northeast of a blaze in
Wallowa County Oregon.  Another fire in Caribou County Idaho resulted
in a plume extending 32 nmi to the northeast.

Wyoming:
A narrow but dense plume of smoke extended 78 nmi to the northeast of
a blaze in Sweetwater County.

Texas:
A fire in McCullock County produced a plume that fanned out for 51 nmi
to the north.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
