DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z September 21, 2005

Idaho/Montana:
The smoke from fires over northern Idaho and western Montana described
yesterday evening is not visible this morning as widespread cloudiness
has overspread the region.

Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley:
Early morning GOES-West imagery shows a general haze across area
stretching from southeastern Missouri/western Kentucky southward to off
the coast of southeastern Texas/Louisiana. This haze could also contain
remnant smoke from the numerous (primarily) agricultural burns detected
over this region yesterday afternoon and evening. GOES-East imagery this
morning also shows a very long smoke plume originating from an intense
fire near Lake White in southwestern Louisiana. This smoke plume extends
more than 100 miles offshore to the SSW from its source.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
