DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z September 23, 2005

Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley:
An extensive area of haze with some smoke from numerous agricultural fires
extended from eastern Texas across Arkansas into southern Missouri and
extreme western Tennessee. A fire in Cameron County Louisiana produced
a discernible smoke plume that extended 67 nmi to the southwest into
the Gulf of Mexico.

Texas:
Thin smoke extended from southwest to northeast for 68 nmi centered on
a fire in Castro County. A large plume of smoke extended 168 nmi to
the southwest of a blaze in Jefferson County.

Tennessee:
A thin plume of smoke extended 67 nmi to the north of a blaze in Marion
County.

California:
A significant area of dust was moving slowly towards the east across
Riverside County.

Washington/Idaho:
Extensive cloud cover precluded the detection of smoke associated with
numerous fires burning across northern Idaho and eastern Washington.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
