DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z October 11, 2005

California:
Fires were active in Plumas, Shasta, Tuolumne, Siskiyou and Tulare
counties as well as in the northern Sacramento Valley. Smoke is present
with all of these but the most notable plume extended 38 nmi to the
southwest of the blaze burning in Shasta County. Dust was noted over
portions of Riverdale, San Bernardino and San Diego counties.

Idaho:
Several fires in northern Idaho along the border with Washington were
generating smoke that was moving towards the east. Another blaze was
active in Clearwater County.

Mid and Lower Mississippi Valley:
Cloud cover precluded the detection of smoke plumes that might be
associated with numerous ag fires in this region.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
