DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z October 15, 2005

Lower Mississippi Valley:
Numerous agricultural fires in this region produced thin smoke
plumes. Smoke and pollution/haze extended southward to the Gulf of Mexico.

Southwest:
Widespread fires produced thin smoke plumes over the  Southwest while
dense smoke emanated from the fires over northern Baja.
A smoke plume noted over Siskiyou County in northern  California was
analyzed erroneously.

Idaho and Montana:
Smoke Plumes extended to the northeast from fires in northern Idaho and
northwestern Montana.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
