DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z October 18, 2005

Montana:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire on the eastern shore of Flathead Lake
in Lake county extends NE 90km and is 16km wind.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire north of Marion in Flathead county
extends NE 85km to the Glacier county line and is 20km wide.

Idaho:
Two fires north of Headquarters in Clearwater county are producing dense
smoke that extends NE 85km into Mineral county, MT.  The two plumes
consolidate into a line 33km wide and cover most of NE Clearwater ans
SE Shoshone county.

Washington:
Dense smoke from a fire near Orin and the Little Pen Oreille Nat'l
Wildlife Reserve in Stevens county extends E 47km to the ID state line
and is 28km wide.
Dense smoke from a fire in Ferry county near SR-21 extends W 20km and
is 19km wide.


Texas:
Moderately dense to very dense smoke from two fires along the E TX
coastline in Anahuac Nat'l Wildlife Reserve and McFaddin N.W.R. cover
all of Chambers and Jefferson counties. The most dense is covers SW
Chambers and extends due S into the Gulf 48km.  A thin area of smoke
from burning last night is stuck in an area of little wind flow and is
about 70km S of the Sabine Pass.

South-central and South-eastern United States:
Multiple agricultural burns are producing thin plumes of smoke throughout
the region, including: the Bootheel of MO, AR, MS, LA, AL, GA, and N FL.
The most significant areas will be described below.

Georgia:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Phillipi in Appling county
extends SE 28km and is 15km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Morton or Gray in Jones county
estends SE 65km and is 14km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near the Webster/Stewart county line
near Preston, GA extends SE 48km and is 13km wide.
Dense smoke from a fire near Esom Hill in Polk county near the AL boarder
extends SE 98km and is on average 15km wide.

Alabama:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Clayton in Barbour county wavers
from S to ESE about 57km and is 15km wide.
Dense smoke from a fire near Basin or Elba in Coffee county extends SW
to the FL boarder or 46km and is 10km wide.

Florida:
Thin smoke from a fire near Osprey in Sarasota county extends W into
the Gulf 123km and is 27km wide.
Thin to moderately dense smoke along the Dixie/Levy county line near
Yellow Jacket extends WSW into the Gulf 93km and is 38km wide.
Moderately dense puff of smoke from a fire near Bascom in Jackson county
extends SW 59km and is 31km wide.
Thin smoke from a fire near Bruce in Walton county extends SW into the
Gulf 122km and is 20km wide.

Mississippi:
Dense smoke from a fire near Mannassa in Clarke county extends S 48km
and is 14km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Scooba in Kemper county extends
SE 92km and is 24km wide.
Thin smoke from a fire near Minter City in Leflore county extends E 82km
and is 31km wide.

Louisiana:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Midway in Bossier county extends
NE 81km and is 22km wide.

Arkansas:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Carthage in Dallas county extends
E 57km and is 10km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Adona in Perry county extends
E 91km and is 38km wide.

Arkansas/Missouri Bootheel:
All of the area is covered in moderately dense smoke from Jackson,
Poinsett, and Mississippi counties AR northward into the bootheel from
too many fires to count.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
