DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2315Z October 19, 2005

SE US and Lower Mississippi Valley:
Multiple agricultural burns are producing thin plumes of smoke throughout
the region, including: GA, FL, AL, MS, LA, TX, AR and the Bootheel of MO.
The most significant areas will be described below.

Georgia:
Thin smoke from a fire near Guysie in Bacon county near the Jeff Davis
and Coffee county lines extends SE 22km and is about 11km wide.
Thin smoke from a fire near Phillipi in Appling county extends SE 17km
and is about 11km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Cochran in Bleckley county began
to drift SE but as it rose higher moved toward the E and now fans 30km
from E to SE.
Thin smoke from a fire near Centerville in Talbot county extends SE 27km
and is 14km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Whitfield in Troup county extends
SSE 23km and is 12km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Pine Lake in Harris county
extends 30km along the GA/AL state line ans is about 13km wide.
A line of moderately dense smoke from two fires near Bellview and
Enterprise in Miller county extends toward the WSW 20km and is 10km wide.

Florida:
Thin smoke from a fire near Yellow Jacket near the Dixie/Levy county
line extends 87km W into the Gulf and is on average 38km wide.

Alabama:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near mcElderry in Talladega county
has separated from the source and drifted SE 59km and is about 22km by
22km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Slaughters in Tallapoosa county
extends SW 41km and is about 15km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Portland in Dallas county extends
W 48km and is 23km wide.
Thin smoke from a fire near Axle in Monroe county extends W 31km and is
18km wide.
Thin smoke from a fire near Midway in Clarke county extends W 49km and
is 21km wide.
Thin smoke from a fire near Topton in Washington county extends WNW 53km
and is 19km wide.

Mississippi:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Macedonia in Noxubee county
extends NNW 48km and is 24km wide.

Multiple fires between the Yazoo and Mississippi Rivers are producing
thin smoke that covers nearly all of the area between the rivers from
Washington and Humphreys county NNE to Panola/Quitman county lines.
Low level flow is leading to a NNE drift of the smoke.

Arkansas:
A thin vail of smoke can be seen covering nearly all of  AR from
Little River county to Conway county to Randolph county and areas SE.
Multiple agricultural burns across the low lands near the Mississippi
river from Chicot county to Prairie to Clay county are covered with
moderately dense smoke.  The smoke is drifting NNE to NE  until it is
obscured by upper level cirrus across the Bootheel of MO.

Louisiana:
Dense smoke from a fire near Hebron in Claibourne Parish fans out from
NW to NE and extends N 21km from its source.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Mora along the
Rapides/Natchitoches parish line extends N 94km and is about 21 km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Meridian in Evangeline parish
extends N 84km and is 20km wide.
Multiple puffs of dense smoke can be seen from multiple fires S of the
Mississippi R. and NW of the Atchafalaya R.  The puffs cover most of
Assumption, Iberville, St. Martin, and Iberia parishes. The smoke is
drifting WNW.

Texas:
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Smithland in Marion county near
the Cass county line extends NNE 91km and is 14km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from two fires (Fuqua in Liberty county near the
Hardin county line and Bering in Polk county) combines into a larger plume
that extends N 228km north of the Fuqua fire and is on average 23km wide.
Moderately dense smoke from a fire near Karen in Montgomery county
extends N 49km and is 18km wide.
Dense smoke from a large fire near Waverly in Madison county extends
NNW 119km and is about 40km wide.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
