DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z November 05, 2005

SOUTHEAST U.S. :
GOES satellite imagery through 0115Z showed scattered small plumes of thin
smoke from agricultural burns over the Southeast. A Fire producing a more
extensive plume was observed in Wilkes County in northeastern Georgia. The
plume extended to the northeast over northern South Carolina. Another
fire in Columbia County in northern Florida caused a large plume that
drifted to the northwest over Hamilton County.

SOUTHWEST U.S. :
Thin smoke plumes were also observed over Arizona and New Mexico. A fire
near the border of San Juan and Mckinley County in New Mexico produced
a larger plume that extended eastward.

NORTHERN MEXICO :
High winds blew dust from an area in Chihuahua(110 km southwest of El
Paso) in northern Mexico to the counties of El Paso and Hudspeth in
western Texas.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
