DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2315Z November 07, 2005

Arizona:
At least 3 fires in southern Coconino county in the Coconino Nat'l
Forest are producing smoke which is being transported NE under very fast
mid-level southwesterly flow ahead of the upper level trof. The largest
and most dense smoke is emanating from a fire between the towns of Long
Valley and Strawberry near SR-87. The 9km wide plume is of dense to
moderately dense consistency and extends 90km to the Navajo county line
north of Winslow. The other 2 fires are producing a thin plume of thin
to moderately dense smoke with the sources located near Mormon Lake and
near SR-99 near the Coconino/Gila county line.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
