DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2330Z November 12, 2005

Kentucky and neighboring states
Smoke plumes can easily be seen in GOES imagery from about a dozen of
the numerous fires in Kentucky. Neighboring areas such as western West
Virginia, western Virginia, Ohio near the Kentucky border, and Tennessee
near the Kentucky border also have one or more fires with smoke plumes.
The plumes are narrow but often long, and they extend toward the north.
The largest plume comes from a fire near the border of Hardin and Bullitt
Counties in Kentucky.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
