DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z December 6, 2005

Arkansas/Louisiana/eastern Texas:
Scattered smoke producing fires were detected across this region during
the afternoon. Some of the most significant smoke plumes were observed
from fires across the southeastern Texas coastal counties of Brazoria
and Matagorda. These smoke plumes were being blown southward and offshore.

New Mexico:
A fire on the eastern fringes of the Lincoln National Forest in northern
Otero County of southern NM was responsible for a thin to moderately
dense smoke plume which extended around 100 miles to the east.

Arizona:
Locally moderately dense smoke was spreading southeastward from a fire
located near Fort Defiance in east central Apache County of northeastern
Arizona.

California:
At least 2 fires burning in the El Dorado National Forest in northern El
Dorado County of east central CA were producing an area of moderately
dense smoke which was moving southward, but was mostly confined to
this county.

Baja California, Mexico:
Smoke from a fire over northwestern Baja was observed moving in
a southwestward direction which at the time was preventing it from
advancing toward the CA-Mexico border.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
