DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2300Z December 26, 2005

Arkansas/Louisiana/East Texas:
Numerous fires were detected over this region but relatively few were
producing smoke discernable in satellite imagery. Of these, the larger
plumes were seen over Calhoun county in southern Arkansas and along the
Red River/Titus county border in east Texas. These plumes were thin in
density and extended to the north.

A large cluster of fires in southern Louisiana, mainly in Vermilion..St
Mary and Iberia parishes south of route 90 has produced an area
of thin smoke extending to the east northeast and reaching to the
Mississippi. Separate plumes were seen over southern Tangipahoa and St
Tammany and extending to the southeast across Lake Pontchartrain.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
