DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2215Z February 19, 2006

North Carolina:
A large fire near Sladesville in Hyde county between Lake Mattamuskeet and
the Pungo inlet and is producing a large amount of smoke that is moving
in all directions between SSE to ENE. The smoke was dense earlier today,
but has become more diffuse as dispersion has increased throughout the
day. At this time, the lower level smoke moving SSE to S is moderately
dense and extends 131km from the fire or aobut 50km SE of Morehead City.
The highest level smoke is very thin and is moving E to ENE and extends
100km from the fire or 20km E of Avon, NC. Between the two plumes is
an area of thin to moderate smoke moving SE and lines up well with the
field of low level cumulus just offshore.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
