DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z February 25, 2006

California:
Fires very near Newburg and Stafford in Humboldt county were combining
to produce a smoke plume extending between 30-40 miles south to near
the Humboldt/Mendocino border.

Multiple fires in the Sacramento Valley counties of
Glenn/Colusa/Yolo/Sutter were producing small and narrow smoke plumes
that were generally lifting north. The most well defined plumes appear
to be originating from fires near the towns of Glenn/Codora in Glenn
county and near Robbins in Sutter county.

A fire over central Placer county appeared to have a very narrow smoke
plume extending 20 miles ENE before the plume became indistinguishable
over the central Sierra Mountains.

North Carolina:
A fire over far eastern Dare county between Manns Harbor and Stumpy Point
earlier exhibited a smoke plume that extended nearly 100 miles out into
the Atlantic Ocean.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
