DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z MARCH 15, 2006

Texas/Oklahoma/Kansas:
Significant fires continue to burn over the Texas Panhandle in the
vicinity of the Donley and Collingsworth border and also over northeastern
Roberts county. The composite moderately dense smoke plume was extending
over 150 miles north to the southern portions of the Kansas counties of
Meade and Clark.

A significant fire has developed over southwestern Pittsburg county just
southwest of McAlester, Oklahoma. A dense smoke plume was extending 45
miles southwest into northeastern Johnston county. The plume was nearly
20 miles wide at its southwestern extent.

A fire over extreme southwest Delta county near Antioch, Texas had
a moderately dense smoke plume extending 30-40 miles southwest into
portions of northeast Kaufman county.

Eastern Texas east to Southern Georgia, widespread fire activity has
mostly died off late this evening. At sunset, mostly thin and narrow
smoke plumes were generally seen drifting south.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
