DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z MARCH 18, 2006

Southeast:
Numerous fires in the Southeast have generated scattered smoke with
significant plumes associated with blazes in Calhoun, Talladega,
Chilton, Escambia and Baldwin counties in Alabama; Colleton County,
South Carolina; and Highlands County, Florida.  All smoke was moving
towards the southeast.

Lower Mississippi Valley:
Dense smoke from fires in Natchitoches County, Louisiana; Shelby County,
Texas; and Grenada County Mississippi was moving towards the south.

Southern California:
Dust was seen moving east across the Salton Sea.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
