DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 01000Z MARCH 26, 2006

SAND/DUST:
Nevada:
A moderately dense sand storm can be seen across the Fallon Naval Range,
Humboldt Salt Marsh and Carson sink of Churchill county. E of US-95.
Sand is being suspended from strong westerly winds behind a cold front
with very impressive thunderstorms along it. Sand extends to the cold
front which is crossing into Lander County to SR-305 NW of Mt. Callahan.

SMOKE:
South Carolina:
A fire near Mount Beulah in SE Aiken county has produced an area of
smoke that is no longer attached to the fire. Currently, the area of
moderately dense smoke is covering all of W Charleston county and its
offshore waters.

Georgia:
A fire near Pleasant Ridge or White Plains in Calhoun county has produced
an area of smoke that is no longer attached to the source fire. Currently,
the area of smoke is no longer in Alabama, but Georgia and is 100km long
from Troup to Taylor county and 36km wide from Harris to Muscogee county.

Alabama:
A fire near Seaboard in S Washington county is producing thin smoke
that extends SE 77km to the AL/FL boarder in central Baldwin county,
AL and is 22km wide.
A fire near Walley in SW Washington county is producing thin to moderate
smoke that extends SE 73km to W Baldwin county, AL and is aobut 13
km wide.

Mississippi:
A fire near Pine Grove in Benton county has produced an area of smoke
that is mixed in with the field of cumulus and is no longer attached to
the source fire. Currently, the area of moderately dense smoke is in a
15km wide line that extends SW to NE from Pontotoc to Union county. The
area is moving SE.
A fire near Tuscan in Choctaw county is producing thin smoke that extends
SE 69km into Kemper county and is 10km wide.
A fire near Harmon in SE Lamar county is producing moderately dense smoke
that extends SE 70km to the Gulf Coast along the Jackson/Harrison county
line and is 25km wide.
A fire near Baxterville in SW Lamar county is producing moderately dense
smoke that extends SE 125Km to the northern tip of the Chandeleur islands
and is 15km wide.
A fire near Kiln in Hancock county is producing moderately dense smoke
that extends SSE to Isle Au Pitre and is 11km wide.

Louisiana:
A fire near Suffolk, MS in Franklin county has produced an area of smoke
that has moved into LA and covers most of S Tangipahoa and E Livingston
parishes, as well as, W Lake Pontchartrain. The area is about 114km
long and 37km wide moving SE.
A fire in N Grant parish near Zion is producing moderate smoke that
extends S 104km to N Evangeline parish and is about 25km wide.

Arkansas:
A fire near Saddle in Fulton county is producing thin smoke that extends
SSE 47km to Sharp county and is about 13km wide.
A large fire near Broomfield county has produced a plume of moderately
dense smoke that extends SE 158km into Jefferson county with low level
smoke moving due E into NW Conway county. A new explosion of dense to
convectively dense smoke extends 36km SE into W Conway county.

Kansas
Much of the eastern 1/4 of KS (S of the Kansas R. and E of the Flint
Hills) has multiple agricultural fires that are producing thin low level
smoke. Large individual plumes of moderate density are identafiable
within a larger area of thin smoke but are too numerous to describe here.

Oklahoma:
Similar to KS, numerous agricultural fires are burning across most
of state most likely producing similar thin smoke that is observed
in KS. However, upper level cirrus has moved in over most of OK making
detection of the thin smoke difficult. Smoke is moving SW to S across
the state.
A fire near Pinhook Corner in Sequoyah county is producing moderate
smoke that is moving S across I-40.

Texas:
A fire near St. Charles Bay near the Aransas N.W.R. is producing dense
smoke that is stuck in a deformation zone that is pulling smoke both W
and E. The plume is 117km wide E-W (from Bee/San Patricio/Refugio county
line to 10km S of the Cavallo Pass) and 43km N-S.
Three fires near Winter Hill in C Nacogdoches, Alazan in SW Nacogdoches,
and near Granville in Angelina county are producing an area of moderately
dense smoke that covers all of W Angelina and E Trinity county.

producing a plume of thin smoke that extends ENE 23km just across the
NM boarder. The plume is about 11km wide.
A fire near Pierda in the Painted Rock Mtns. in Maricopa county is
producing a plume of thin smoke that extends NE 39km to near Buckeye
and is aobut 14km wide.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
