DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z MARCH 28, 2006

Florida:
GOES visible imagery through early afternoon indicated a possible
area of leftover thin smoke which was moving generally in a westward
or northwestward direction off the west coast of Florida. The area of
possible smoke was approximately 60 miles off the west coast of Florida
over the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

Arkansas:
A rather significant fire over eastern Johnson County of northwestern
Arkansas was beginning to emit a locally dense smoke plume which appeared
to be spreading off to the southeast.

Central Plains/Middle Mississippi Valley:
GOES West visible imagery with a low sun angle very early this morning
showed a hazy region which included a possible area of thin leftover
smoke likely resulting from yesterday's agricultural(primarily) fires. The
possible smoke had wrapped around the southern portion of a low pressure
system in a thin band stretching from eastern Kansas across southern
Missouri to western Kentucky and western Tennessee.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
