DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0015Z APRIL 09, 2006.

Northern Plains:
Smoke was moving north from a fire in Burleigh County, North Dakota.

Central Plains:
Vast number of ag fires in eastern Kansas have produced a thick pall of
smoke that was lumbering south while a fire in Greeley County in western
Kansas resulted in smoke that was moving towards the north.

Southern Plains:
Smoke was moving south from fires in Pushmatama County Oklahoma and
Houston County Texas.

Lower Mississippi Valley:
Smoke was also moving south from blazes in Saltine County Arkansas and
Harrison County Louisiana.

New Mexico:
A fire in Grant County produced a smoke plume that was moving towards
the northeast.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
