DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z MAY 9, 2006.

Gulf of Mexico:
Light to moderately dense smoke continues to cover most of the western and
central Gulf of Mexico. The smoke stems from fires in southern Mexico
especially the states of Veracruz and Tabasco. There is an area of
especially dense smoke centered at about 26N 91W and moving northward.
At this time, the U.S. Gulf Coast states do not seem to be under the
area of smoke.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
