DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z MAY 10, 2006.

Gulf of Mexico/Louisiana/Southern US:
Large area of dense smoke is approaching the Louisiana, Mississippi
and Alabama coastlines from the northern and central Gulf of Mexico.
The smoke was moving north at approximately 30 knots. A large area
of thin smoke extends from the Bay of Campeche to the southeast Texas
coastline. The source for all of this smoke is widespread numerous
fires burning across Mexico and Central America.

Florida:
A large fire over southwestern Palm Beach County generated a smoke plume
that extended approximately 24 km to the east northeast of the blaze.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
