DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1615Z MAY 14, 2006.

Gulf of Mexico/Florida:
The numerous amount of fires along the Yucatan Peninsula are producing
a moderately dense mass of smoke that is covering most of the western
portion of the Gulf of Mexico and moving north, almost reaching the
southern borders of Texas and Louisiana.
The wildfire along the Hendry-Palm Beach-Broward county border
region is still burning today, producing a dense smoke plume that is
moving north over Lake Okeechobee.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
