DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z May 20, 2006.

Bay of Campeche:
Faint and diffuse area of smoke likely originating from fires across
southeastern Mexico including the Yucatan Peninsula and portions of
Central America blanketed the Bay of Campeche. This area was slowly
moving north.

Southern Canada/Northern Plains:
Early morning GOES-West visible imagery showed an area of haze stretching
along and ahead of a cold front extending from southern Saskatchewan
Province in southern Canada across the Dakotas and Minnesota. This haze
could contain the remnants of smoke from yesterday's mainly agricultural
fires across this region.

Southern Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley:
A faint region of haze exists across the entire area this morning which
possibly could contain remnant smoke from yesterday's fires over eastern
Texas and Louisiana.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
