THROUGH 0145Z May 23, 2006.

New Mexico:
A fire in Hidalgo County produced a thin plume of smoke that extended
to the northeast. A large area of blowing dust was moving through the
center of the state. Thick dust was seen moving east northeast from
sources in the extreme northern portion of the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Plains States:
A large area of smoke and haze extended from the Gulf of Mexico to
South Dakota. The primary source region is believed to be fires in
Central America.

Louisiana:
Dense smoke was moving north from a fire in Grant County.

Alabama:
Smoke was moving east from a fire in Baldwin County.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
