DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0215Z May 27, 2006.

Lower Mississippi Valley:
A fire in George county in southern Mississippi is producing a moderately
dense plume of smoke that was originally moving to the northeast, but
winds shifted and the smoke is now starting to shift southeast. A group
of several fires along the eastern coast of Arkansas are producing light
plumes of smoke heading in a northeasterly direction.

Southwest US:
The large wildfire in Hidalgo county of southwestern New Mexico is still
burning today, producing a very dense plume of smoke that is heading
northeast. A fire in Pima county of southcentral Arizona is producing
a small narrow plume of smoke that is heading north and possibly moving
near or across the Tucson metro area.

California:
Several fires flared up late today in California, some producing
relatively light plumes of smoke. A fire in Imperial county of southern
California is producing a light plume of smoke that is moving northeast.
Another fire in Kern county started producing a small plume of smoke
late in the day that is heading southeast. A fire further up the coast
in Stanislaus county is producing a slightly denser smoke plume that is
moving eastward.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
